AI Discovery Calls: Better Prep, Better Conversation
AI does not run the discovery call. AI makes the rep more prepared. The conversation is still the rep work.
Direct answer
AI discovery calls use AI before, during, and after the call. Before: AI builds a pre-call brief and question stack. During: AI captures notes and risk signals. After: AI produces a structured summary and follow-up content. The conversation itself is still the rep work.
Who this is for
- AEs running consultative discovery calls
- SDRs handling first-call qualification
- Sales managers coaching discovery skill
- Sales leaders building discovery standards
The problem
Most reps treat discovery as a checklist of questions. AI makes the prep easier. The conversation skill stays the same: listening, asking better questions, and reading the buyer. AI is a force multiplier on prep quality. The conversation is still where deals are made or lost.
How AI fits the discovery call
Pre-call brief
AI reads company context, recent news, and the buyer LinkedIn. Produces a 1-page brief in 5 minutes.
Question stack
AI builds a customized question stack for the buyer role and company context.
Value hypothesis
AI drafts a buyer-specific value hypothesis the rep tests in the call.
In-call notes
AI captures notes and flags risk signals while the rep focuses on the buyer.
Post-call summary
AI produces structured notes, next steps, and a follow-up draft.
The brief
What does a good pre-call brief include?
Six things, one page. Company context: what the business does, how it makes money, what changed recently. Buyer context: role, tenure, background, what they have posted or said publicly. Likely priorities: what someone in that seat at that company is probably measured on this quarter.
Then the working material. A question stack ordered from broad to specific, built for the buyer’s role rather than copied from a generic list. A value hypothesis: one sentence on why this company might buy, which the rep tests in the call instead of assuming. And a landmine list: the competitor they already use, the initiative that failed last year, the topic to handle with care.
AI assembles this in about 5 minutes from public sources and the CRM. The rep spends 10 minutes reading and editing it. That 15 minutes replaces the 45 minutes of tab-hopping most reps do, or the zero minutes the rushed ones do.
The brief is preparation, and preparation shows. Buyers can tell within 2 questions whether the rep did the reading.
Coaching
How do managers coach discovery with AI?
Call recordings plus AI review give the manager something no scorecard ever did: the exact moment the call turned. The buyer mentioned a budget freeze and the rep moved on. The rep asked a great question and then stepped on the answer. AI flags the moments. The manager picks one.
One is the number that matters. A rep cannot fix 5 behaviors at once. The manager picks the single highest-impact behavior, works it in the 1:1, and checks the next call for the change. Then the next behavior.
The weekly rhythm: AI reviews the week’s discovery calls, the manager reads the flags in 10 minutes, the 1:1 spends 15 minutes on one real moment from one real call. Coaching gets specific because the material is specific.
The full coaching system, including the rhythm and the inspection discipline, is covered in sales coaching for managers.
Training
Where do sellers learn AI-supported discovery?
CASH, the Certified AI Sales Hunter program, runs 12 weeks and 33 hours and trains the full prospecting-to-discovery motion with AI: the pre-call brief, the question stack, the live conversation, and the follow-up. Sellers practice on their own calendar of real calls and get evaluated on the output, pass or fail.
For leaders setting the discovery standard across a team, CASL runs 16 modules across 44 hours and 24 live sessions and covers the manager side: what good discovery looks like, how to inspect it, and how to coach it.
Greg Grand is the founder of G Squared Advisors, a Fractional CRO, and a Vistage Speaker with 30+ years in enterprise sales leadership. He built the Google and Apple accounts at Celestica on the strength of exactly this motion: deep preparation, real questions, and follow-through.

FAQ
Common questions
Can AI run a discovery call for me?
No. AI makes the rep more prepared. The conversation itself is rep skill: listening, questioning, reading the buyer.
What AI tool is best for discovery prep?
Claude is strong for the deep account read and brief building. ChatGPT is strong for fast question stacks. Both work.
Should I let AI take notes during the call?
Most reps and managers find AI note capture useful. Just confirm the customer is comfortable with the recording.
How does AI change the discovery skill?
It does not. Discovery skill is still listening, asking better questions, and adapting. AI just makes the prep deeper and the follow-up faster.
Should discovery calls be recorded for AI review?
Where the customer consents and company policy allows it, yes. The recording feeds the post-call summary, the coaching review, and the deal record. Disclose the recording at the start of the call and honor any request to stop. A call the buyer is uncomfortable on is worth less than a clean set of manual notes.
Does AI-prepped discovery make reps sound scripted?
Only when the rep reads the brief out loud instead of using it. The brief is homework, and homework makes the conversation more natural because the rep is not scrambling to think of the next question. The reps who sound scripted are usually the ones running a generic question list with no preparation behind it.
How long should discovery prep take with AI?
About 15 minutes for a standard call: 5 for AI to assemble the brief, 10 for the rep to read it, cut what is wrong, and mark the 2 questions that matter most. High-stakes calls with several stakeholders deserve 30. What the team saves is the hour of manual tab-hopping, and what it gains is that the rushed rep who used to walk in cold now walks in with something.
